Rather than restrict play to the typical 8×8 variants of chess, it is possible to include the 8×3 adjuncts of four player chess and the 11×11 squares of four queen chess on one board. In this case, the central 8×8 is used for some games whereas the surrounding 8×3 banks are permitted for three or four player chess games. The addition of one 3×3 corner is suitable for four queen chess and the whole 14×14 permits further variations.
